Taxpayers in New Rochelle will be happy to learn (Particularly South End parents whose children must attend Isaac) that Isaac E. Young 8th graders scored higher than their counterparts in Elmsford, Peekskill, Yonkers and Mount Vernon Middle Schools in the 2009 English Language Arts New York State Assessments.
The Journal News published a complete database (click here) of New York State Assessment scores for the public to review, compare and weigh in on how much value they are getting for the their hard earned tax dollars. All this just in time for the May, 19th Budget Vote.
Big Deal…
Look who it’s
Big Deal…
Look who it’s being compared to.
Let’s see Isaac compared to Pelham, Scarsdale, Rye, Bronxville, etc…
Not the bottom of the barrel like Elmsford, Peekskill, Yonkers and Mount Vernon.
But like everything New Rochelle does, they try to hide the truth of how bad our school system is. All one has to do is take a look and they will see how bad our school district is. New Rochelle School Tax is one of the highest in Westchester County and the Nation, but we have some of the lowest scores out there. So we the tax pays pay a high price for failure. We pay for illegal aliens that bleed our city, our state and our nation dry. They take from the system and never give a dime to it. They deprive our children of a quality education buy slowing down the learning so that these illegal aliens don’t get left behind. In other words they rape our children of a quality education. This is more true in the South End of New Rochelle then in the North End. Just look at Jefferson, Columbus and Trinity where the Illegal Alien (Hispanic) Population in over Half the student population and of that population more the 70% don’t speak English.
So, since 1992 the New Rochelle School District has been rotting due to our corrupt & pathetic politicians and school board.
Thats not much to talk
Thats not much to talk about: beating Yonkers, Elmsord, Peekskill & Mt. Vernon. Where’s Chappaqua, Scarsdale or Edgemont? Those are schools we should be competing with, not the others
Comparing our own Middle
Comparing our own Middle Schools, am I reading the numbers correctly? ELA scores for 2009 show ALMS 8th graders ‘meeting standards with distinction’ (Level 4) by about 3/4 more students than IEYMS 8th graders. While IEYMS had 1/3 more 8th grade students than ALMS in ‘partially meeting learning standards’ (Level 2). Can someone explain this? I hope my calculations are wrong because if they’re correct, IEY students entering high school are going to have a more difficult time then their ALMS counterparts. They may not be able to take any Advanced Placement or Honors classes. I hope they will be able to pursue a college education.
this misleading and unfair
this misleading and unfair headline remains on the blog. It should be removed or at least the following facts should be noted.
1. you are only talkiing about the 8th grade.
2. your comparison base is carefully selected to show the poorest performing skills in westchester/rockland.
3. we do our youngsters at Isaac plus the faculty a great disserve by this type of cheap banner.
4. what would you say if someone ran a blog comparing isaac 8th graders to those in mamaroneck, eastchester, pelham, scarsdale — all of which abut onto new rochelle. oh yeah, include bronxville as well
isaac if full of great kids who can and often do learn as well as “other kids” and a lot of excellent teachers; especially handling core course. Two significant folks when I was subbing there were lori marinaro in esl and mike galland in math. great teachers and fine people. their major issue is in leadership and not what organisciak would label unfair comparisons to other districts due to our “diversity.”
I am going to continue to point out positives and highlight where the matters for attention and improvement areas are since this non-functioning administration and board will not.
here is what you want to concentrate on — it would be the percentage of youngsters in Isaac and elsewhere that are performing at levels 1 and 2 — below and way below standard. you can see we have a lot of work ahead of us especially in ELA and no, it is not an ELS problem as much as people would like you to believe. Just put the right emphasis on these kids and they will improve as well. Again, the faculty at Isaac is up to it.
This is how a responsbile district looks and reports data. It doesn’t obfuscate, pull out comparison against other kids who likely are experiencing their own educational, social, and economic issues. It defines the problems and puts resources to work.
Readers, please place the state results hyperlink (in blue in the blog) onto your favorites icon so you can see for yourself where everything stands,
oh by the way, congratulations to Mt Vernon who have done quite well in pulling their productivity upward despite formidible funding hurdles. Yet, they intelligently handled these and the kids prospered more than suffered. Sounds like a good superintendent on hand and the board is anything but a rubber stamp. They have also ferreted out non-residental students and recently, Yonkers has made a start in this area. You see board members, get off your chairs and stop asking taxpayers to do your work. Just get it done — thanks to Dr Wagner and Mr Malefetano who can see this as an issue.
warren gross
congratulations and we
congratulations and we should be proud. we should also change the banner to read that these kids scored higher than counterparts in four districts that we would hope do not become our comparative norm. there are many other districts that outperformed our kids as the helpful hyperlink to the state data base will indicate. lets acknowledge this and do whatever it takes to get our deserving youngsters at a level where they routinely compete with other lower westchester and putnam school districts like mamaroneck, rye, and yes, even scarsdale. but give credit for this, but change the banner headline in the margin so our parents are not misled and our kids are given a more challenging goal to reach. i know the teachers and kids at isaac and they have what it takes to get the job done.
by the way when you review the so called district nonenses about newsweek, 5 percent of top districts in nation — look at our high school results and compare them as i indicated in a blog re: emery schweig’s statement. you will see we have a long way to go here as well. given what you will see, you will be forced to question the district soundbites on school performance and thus, the veracity of the other rationale. But again, and I reinforce this in capitals (sorry Bob) OUR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS CAN REACH HIGH GOALS AND STANDARDS. They deserve our support, but they also deserve truth in packaging and honest evaluations. give them goals and support and they will attain great heights and a flat budget, better expense management and most important, better district management and board oversight will get them there.
