Tech-saavy New Yorkers have contributed more than a tenth of all mobile giving to the Red Cross according to a recent blog post by the International aid organization.
News reports have indicated that younger people (those below age 30) who say they have not given to disaster relief before — especially teens and college students – have been willing to add $10 to their phone bills by sending a text message to donate the money to the Red Cross.
It’s easy. To donate to the Red Cross via a text message:
1. Send a text with the word “HAITI” to 90999 on any cell phone with texting capability.
2. You will receive a reply message asking you to confirm that you wish to donate.
3. Reply “Yes” and you will get a messaging confirming that $10 will be charged to your phone bill.
That’s it. It takes about 8 seconds to complete the donation.

To donate over the telephone or for more information call Call 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767) or 1-800-257-7575 (Español)
Making donations over the telephone is the most expensive way for the Red Cross to receive donations so, if you can, make your donation via text or the web but in any case make the donation.
