Letter to the Editor: New Rochelle DPW Doesn’t Care About People With Disabilities

Written By: Robert Cox

To whom it may concern,

I was park on a street in New Rochelle today, the name of the street is New Rochelle Place. As I pick up my brother who had a stroke, a New Rochelle DPW truck with A704 on the side of the truck, push the snow with his plow and block the front of my car with the snow so I couldn’t pull out. This type of action indicates that New Rochelle doesn’t care about people with disabilities especially when you see the truck driver look at you & stop , then drive off. This happen 2:15pm on the street, not in a drive way and was in front of the Westchester Dept. Of Health. I did try to call city hall about this matter, but no one answered their phones.

Sincerely,
Claude Zoref

  1. Follow up
    Claude,

I forwarded your message to Jeff Coleman, head of DPW. He is a good guy and I am sure he will look into this.

Having just dug through about 1,000 pounds of ice and snow blocking the end of MY driveway, I can certainly understand your frustration but in fairness to the driver of A704, these guys are under tremendous strain to clear streets as rapidly as possible and they are blocking everyone in as they pass.

I do not agree that this incident shows that “New Rochelle doesn’t care about people with disabilities”. The driver would have no way of knowing that your brother had a stroke. From what you describe, it is possible that the driver may have been looking/stopping out of caution. Is there some reason you feel the driver was intentionally blocking you in?

    1. My Plow driver play a little
My Plow driver play a little game during every snow storm. He closes my front end of the driveway that I just clear and I punch it back open by the time he is making his second pass to clear more of his street.
He then closes it again and 5 minutes later after I open it again with my trusty snow thrower he finally adjust his plowing. The truith is they have a tough job but the look on his face laughing as he came around 3 times and found I had corrected his little mischief was almost worth doing it 3 times because I certainly could have waiting for him to move on to other routes and residents to screw with. Sorry Bob is this case this guy actually enjoyed closing up driveways. He was laughing his butt off.

      1. Fire them…
Any city employee caught doing this should be terminated immediately.

In the olden days there would not be much you could do about this.

These days most cell phones will allow you to get the goods on someone like this before they even realize they’ve been caught. Not everyone has one but if you had such a phone or even a regular old camcorder handy, your story would play out VERY differently

Imagine if after you cleared the driveway you had captured video of him acting as you describe and then posted it to Talk of the Sound. In a matter of minutes readers would have ID’d the guy and filed complaints.

I urge every reader to familiarize themselves with how they can grab pix and video using their phone and get in the habit of snapping away when the opportunity arises.
