White Plains, NY: Westchester County Legislator Jim Maisano (R, New Rochelle) has a plan to save paper and money for Westchester County. Minority Leader Maisano is calling for “all printing and photocopying by County employees to be double-sided. From both environmental and economic standpoints, the savings in cost and paper would be significant by using both sides of all documents.”
Maisano notes that most County copy machines have the capability to copy on both sides. “Our County government is looking to cut waste across the board,” says Maisano. “This is a quick, simple way to do something that will cut expenses, while having a positive environmental impact.”
Maisano has been troubled by receiving single-sided documents from different County departments – sometimes hundreds of pages long – that end up quickly discarded.
If Maisano’s proposal is passed, it will become a requirement for all County employees to use both sides of paper. Maisano hopes that other Westchester businesses will be inspired to do the same. “I’m following the theory of ‘think globally, act locally.’ I hope the County government can help lead the way on this issue,” continued Maisano.
Maisano’s legislation would permit single-sided copying only in limited circumstances such as official outgoing correspondence or when a document must comply with state or federal law.
“This is an excellent way to conserve paper, reduce costs and save some trees,” added Maisano. “And it sets an important example by reminding employees that in all respects, the Westchester County government is serious about cutting spending.
