10/10/10 – A Day in the Life of New Rochelle
We are six (6) days away from 10-10-10. 10-10-10 is Sunday, October 10th, 2010 when professional and amateur photographers will fan out throughout the city and photograph New Rochelle on one 24 hour day, October 10th, 2010. The plan is that these photographs will be: (1) integrated into an online slide show/photo presentation and; (2) published in a photo book. This book will be a record of New Rochelle in one moment in time. The profits will be donated to a local charity selected by the New Rochelle Chamber of Commerce.
Core Team of Photographers
At this point we have assembled a small core team of photographers, but are seeking to include many photographers in order to cover the entire city effectively and from a variety of personal perspectives. Would you like to participate? Click here to register. www.101010nr.com
Mood of Photos
Generally the photo book should give an honest, positive impression of New Rochelle. Personally, I prefer photos that are colorful, technically crisp, esthetically balanced, dynamic, but also show the people, places and faces of New Rochelle. These photos should reflect what 2010 looks like within the context of New Rochelle. What are people doing, wearing, carrying, etc. Where are they going? Where do they shop, worship, drive, relax, etc.
In New Rochelle on Sunday, October 10th, 2010 babies will be born in Sound Shore Hospital, couples will be married at Blessed Sacrament Church, and birthdays will be celebrated in downtown restaurants like Bella, Bella and Applebees. Policemen will give tickets, moms will buy sneakers for their children at Modells, and teenagers will go to the movies at New Roc City. Teams will participate in sporting events, wildlife will delight, and people will enjoy their pets. Some will rake leaves, paint porches, push baby strollers and get tattoos. This is what we want to capture.
People in Photos
Regarding people in photographs, we can legally photograph people in public settings (parks, streets, events) for publishing on the web. However, for printing in a copyrighted book, we will need permission from the people to be printed. We will provide a release form here for people to sign for this purpose. Otherwise, you may photograph the backs of people’s heads, people from a distance, crowds, etc. and not need a release form. You may not, however, put a zoom lens on your camera and photograph a person through the window of a house washing dishes, for example. That person has an expectation of privacy and should not be photographed.
Logistics
Please plan on taking photos throughout the day on 10-10-10 and providing the very best of your photographs either on DVD, CD or uploaded to the http://101010nr.com website. You will need to register on http://101010nr.com order to upload photos. Upon uploading photos to the web, you will be prompted for a photo caption that may appear with the photo if it makes the book. Be prepared to submit related photo release forms and any other notations you feel necessary to describe the photos. Please try to provide the photos within 5 days of the shoot. This event is rain or shine. Email here for the address to drop off CDs/DVDs when you are ready. High quality photos are the most desirable, however a page of camera phone shots might make for an interesting page.
Local Sponsors
Our local sponsor is the Chamber of Commerce of New Rochelle. Our media partner for the project is Talk of the Sound. Any profits from the book will be donated to a local charity selected by the Chamber of Commerce.
Special Note
This is a one day project, but if a day before or a day after 10-10-10 there is an especially compelling event or photo that should be included in the book, please submit that, too. You never know …
Photo Selection
A small committee will select the photos that will appear in the book and in the online photo presentation. There is no guarantee that submitted photos will be selected. Photographers will not be compensated for their work. On the website you will grant 10-10-10 permission to use your photographs, but you maintain the right to sell your photos to other magazines or to submit them to contests, etc.
For reference, you may want to review the lovely and comprehensive book “New Rochelle Portrait of a City”, available on Amazon and “A Day in the Life of China”, available on Amazon, too.
