The New Rochelle Fire Department aggressively put down a working fire at a boiler plant building at the Sound Shore Medical Center in New Rochelle this evening. When the NRFD arrived, black smoke was billowing from the roof of the two-story structure. News helicopters from Channel 2 and Channel 7 hovered over head, capturing dramatic video of flames shooting through the roof.

After the fire was brought under control, Fire Commissioner Ray Kiernan said there were no injuries to fire fighters, hospital staff or patients. No patients were evacuated. The boilers in the building were taken offline. Con Ed workers were on hand and making plans with the Sound Shore engineering staff to bring in a tanker truck to provide hot water to the medical center.

It’s time for heads to roll at SSMC for the latest fiasco.
How did the City of New Rochelle Building Dept. & the New Rochelle Fire Department allow natural gas fired steam boilers to be housed in a plywood structure (obviously not even coated with a fire retardant) for ten years? Could it be that SSMC has some influence over them ?
What if those boilers were to blow, where is the protection for the employees and patients?
This is just the latest display of incompetence by the administration of SSMC. Let’s not forget the Legionaires Disease fiasco which was caused by a lack of proper maintenance of the air conditioning system but was just brushed under the rug as a routine problem, although I’m sure that there are still a few lawsuits pending.
It should be noted that the boilers which just burnt up were “temporary” boilers to replace the original boilers which were allowed to fail for lack of proper maintenance and now they will need to rent more “temporary” boilers to replace the other destroyed “temporary” boilers.
SSMC has been on a steady decline under the reign of the current administration and yet the administrator is the highest paid in the county if not the state.
SSMC is a blight and an embarassment to the citizens of New Rochelle and it’s time the Board of Governors opened up there eyes and made some changes. Unless of course they have selfish reasons for looking the other way.

  3. Plywood ???
Who in the FD and/or building department allowed a boiler room to be constructed of plywood, without fireproofing??? Somebody must have had the blinders on. Don’t even say it was temporary because it’s been there at least 10-15 years. Try doing that at your building. Somebody should look into this.

  4. Smoke could been seen from Throgs Neck Bridge
