Truck Blocks New Rochelle Handicap Access to Public Sidewalk for a Week; No Citations Issued

Written By: Robert Cox

Truck on Sidewalk.jpgFor those who have been complaining about the ticket blitz and increased permit fees you have your answer — parking in the lots is for suckers. Just start parking on the sidewalks instead!

An alert reader sent along this photo of a truck that has been parked on a public sidewalk for almost a week without a citation. As can be seen the truck is not only blocking the sidewalk but the handicap access as well. The truck is sticking out of the Hyundai dealership U.S. 1 Auto Sales on Route 1 across from the Baskin-Robbins/Dunkin’ Donuts.

UPDATE: Ted Tanney, owner of U.S. 1 Auto Sales tells Talk of the Sound he did not receive any complaints about the truck from residents or NRPD but would have it moved off the sidewalk by the close of business today (Tuesday). Tanney said he wanted residents living near his business to be happy and that in the future he hoped people in the area would call him with any concerns. He pointed out that Judge Preston Scher was one of his customers. Moments later Scher drove onto the lot and came into the office.

Whether you have a concern or want to buy a car, Tanney can be reached at 914-636-4439.

The truck, by the way, is for sale.

  1. Parking Parity
A good news reporter usually gets his facts first. In this case Mr. Cox, you did not. There are two tickets on two separate days issued to that truck. Report the facts in your column.

    1. send them along
The neighbors say they were ignored and the owner told me directly that he was never informed by NRPD there was a problem with the truck being parked where it was. I would consider two parking tickets to be NRPD informing him that the truck was a problem so it sounds like you are saying Mr. Tanney was not accurate.

If you have the information about the parking tickets please send that along.

    2. Truck blocking sidewalk
Why ticket the truck, why not just tell the owner to move it. Why not have a dispatcher or a desk officer just call up and tell him to move it. I know the police are shorthanded, just make the call, no violation and the problem is solved.

  2. Truck blocking sidewalk
I was sitting in Dunkin Dounts and I noticed the truck blocking the sidewalk.
The call was made at 8:01Am on 11/11 . The call is still listed on my cell.

  3. parking non offense
Get a life guys. You make issues out of nothing. It shows you just have nothing valuable to report. If you want to be a respected news outlet dont rant on about petty parking offenses.

    1. Vinny315
Oops you must be one of new ro finest or a carrol lover? What if the person that reported this is in a wheelchair and can’t cross the street what then? It’s funny most often you see police cars there at dunkin doughnuts all the time and not one of you noticed this? You guys sure know to go to the lots on maple ,Lawton ,prospect church division to give tickets Maybe Vinny 315 is just mad that this site tells the truth about the going on’s in this city for far to long and can’t stand the truth or maybe he just has to start doing his job? Either way this site is here to stay and city hall and the departments better start waking up. There’s a new site in this city and New Rochelle it’s officials and departments don’t control it. Remember it’s the residents who pay your salary. Things are changing so vote them all out in 2011?

    2. the issue is parity not pettiness
A resident leaves their car in a legal parking spot at a City lot to go shopping in downtown then exceeds the meter by three minutes and gets a $25 ticket.

A used car dealership leaves a truck parked in an illegal location, a public sidewalk no less, for five days and gets no ticket.

The issue is the law must be enforced equally for all or we are no longer a nation of laws but a mob to be controlled by those in power. At a time when residents are already complaining about 24/7 metered parking, aggressive ticketing, and increased parking permit fees it is patently unfair that a used car dealership gets treated differently than residents.

      1. I’m sure if you called
#1 I’m sure if you called the police and told them to ticket the truck it would of been done, but NO lets make a story out of it lets get pictures

#2 Five day no one reported it, hum why not? they new it was there five day

#3 The truck should of been reported, not reported on

        “enforced equally” you say!

Have you even thought sometimes things get over looked and not on purpose, just over looked

You can do something by helping the police(reporting) or sit back and just criticize them or you can criticize yourselves for not helping them, so who ever brought this to your attention was not helping any one

    3. Its an issue when we the tax
Its an issue when we the tax paying citizens start getting nickel and dimed by city hall with parking tickets. And the enforcement is selective at best and if you’ve ever been ticketed forget about trying to get the ticket waived at city court, your apt to spend 3 or 4 hours only to have to knocked down by $10, it just isn’t worth your time.

Maybe its time to start supporting our downtown w/free parking? Then we could eliminate all those Community Disservice Officers, but sadly city hall’s too addicted to spending your money to change anything.

      1. It’s the law
It’s a law, and it was broken in order to get a ticket. If you get a ticket for doing something wrong then it’s up to you to pay it, and it’s up to you if you want to fight it.

I have never receive a ticket in a spot i paid for and if my time expired by 3 min I’m in the wrong, and would just pay

Community service Officers should cover his pay plus make money for the spot you take up when you meter times out and along with the maintenance need for the lots. ( I don’t know if they do, there always in the coffee shops!)

Free parking SURE!, on the tax payers back, Very little or no tax go in to fix these lot up, it’s from the meters and parking fines. I’m all for free parking just raise the tax rate a little!

  4. That’s not Hyundai, it’s US 1 Auto Sales
And not only do they park their cars all over the sidewalk, they double park, pull out and into the driveway like madmen and they create a tremendous hazard. It will just be a matter of time before someone is seriously injured or killed in front of this place.

      1. Be glad !!
        south side man,
Just be glad that we have a avenue where we can go and get an Instant voice to be heard!!!
