LOCKDOWN IS NOW OVER, HAVE AT IT!

Written By: Robert Cox

The heavy lifting on upgrade the site from Drupal 5 to Drupal 6 is now over but the work is not done. This was about 4 months in the making so I am very happy to have gotten to this point. This is not the grand opening but a soft opening. Hopefully by Monday I can announce we are fully launched.

Most of the remaining work is at the edges or cosmetic and so we are opening up the site again. I believe all posts and comments did make it from the old to the new but if we did miss one or two, my apologies.

The goal here was both to take advantage of the enhanced capabilities of Drupal 6 which includes polls, language translation, newsletters, and other items that will become apparent over time and to reduce server load, making running the site more efficient. That will mean faster load times and, as the site continues to grow, reduced server costs down the road.

Part of the efficiency is to move much of what was on the home page into the drop-down menus at the top. Quite a lot of embedded content has been removed. I am probably going to remove or move See-Click-Fix because it is a bit of a hog in terms of bandwidth and space on the home page

You can also see the beginnings of a spanish-language section of the site. La Charla de New Rochelle; “charlar” means to chat as in sitting around a table chatting with your friends; there was no good translation of Talk of the Sound. A woman at the bagel store in Wykagyl suggested La Charla so thanks to you, unknown bagel aficionado!

I still have some kinks to work out tomorrow.

1. More menu items to add

2. There is a problem with the BlogAPI module so no one can post via MarsEdit, Ecto, Windows Live Writer, etc.

3. There is a “path” issue which is causing photos on the server not to display. Photos that are embedded (reside on another server) or are part of ads or both can be viewed just not photos that were uploaded to Talk of the Sound.

4. Several modules need to be added and some enabled and settings edited.

Generally, if you see something odd or the site appears to be down just wait a fee minutes and try again. It may be us fiddling with something on the backend. Other than that, the site has all the content, posts and comments that were there before.
