Monroe_JumpstartStudents_Fall_2010.jpgNew Rochelle, NY — High school juniors and seniors can “Jumpstart” their college education by earning three college credits at Monroe College in New Rochelle in a special 13-week course, beginning in January 2011 and running through mid-April. The classes are held Saturday mornings and run for about three-and-a-half hours, each week. There is no tuition and textbooks are also given without cost.

“Students will have various courses to choose from, next semester,” said Lisa Scorca, assistant director of admissions and coordinator of the Jumpstart program. “Courses are taught by Monroe College faculty from our various academic disciplines including Business and Accounting, Criminal Justice, Information Technology, Allied Health, Hospitality Management and the Culinary Arts, and English and Social Sciences.” The final course offerings and start date will be determined by faculty and space availability.

The minimum requirements for participating students include being a high school senior in good standing with a GPA of 75% or better; successfully passing the Jumpstart application and placement test, and completion of the Jumpstart 350-word (maximum) typed essay on “Why College is Important to Me.” An official high school transcript is also required. All materials must be submitted by December 30th. The start date of the program will be determined by enrollment and professors’ schedules.

“These are the minimum requirements,” emphasized Scorca. “We take the Jump Start program very seriously. Students who apply and get accepted into the program are expected to show up every Saturday morning for 13 weeks. This may put a dent in some kids’ social lives but it will definitely help smooth out any jagged edges in their high school records. They’ll be worked hard by our professors but they will also have a lot of fun and make a whole new circle of friends.”

An additional incentive for Jumpstart applicants is that if they successfully complete the program and then elect to apply to Monroe for one of its 20 associate and bachelor’s degree programs, they will qualify for a tuition grant.
Students accepted into the program will also have to provide copies of their birth certificate, Social Security card, immunization record and evidence or permanent residency, prior to starting classes.

Interested students, parents and guardians, or high school guidance counselors seeking more information are encouraged to visit the College’s Web site: www.monroecollege.edu or call Ms. Scora at 914-740-6807.

  1. New building?
That picture looks like the drawing of the building they want to build next to the old Gundelach’s mower shop, or did they just build it on Thanksgiving day with out any one knowing

    1. temp
the photo was a temp while I waited to get an image from the author.

Also, as noted previously, I am spending a good part of this week finishing the migration to Drupal 6. As you can now see, one of the features is the ability to add captions to photos. This post is the first one on Talk of the Sound to have a caption using this new feature. I hope to have captions as a rule rather than an exception as go forward.

      1. Photo Captioning is also good for blind web users
Another nice thing about captioning is that when a blind person is on the internet, the captions are read out loud for them. Also, if you use the code ‘strong’, the words are spoken louder.
