Main Street Boxing Skates Into Third Week of Golden Gloves

The Main Street Boxing Club (310 Main Street, New Rochelle) plowed its way through the second week of the New York Golden Gloves Tournament. Five of six fighters advanced into the second round of competition. Three of the fighters actually entered the ring and three were given byes into the next round.
Mikey Brogan (see 1/9/2011 article “Boxing Pantheon Greets Main Street Boxing Team, Grand Central Commuters”) cruised to a unanimous verdict over his opponent in the 152 lb. Novice class . According to Head Coach, Ryan O’Leary, Brogan “threw lots of punches, connecting with long jabs.” The scoring may have been a little too close for O’Leary’s comfort, but ultimately Mikey moves ahead. The tutelage that he received from the boxing legends at Grand Central earlier in the month reaped dividends.
Alejandro Ramirez won a close decision over his opponent in the 152 lb. division via a 4-1 tally of the judges. O’Leary felt that Ramirez deserved the verdict as he threw more punches and he landed the cleaner shots. In the amateur ranks, the scoring tends to favor the more stylistic of fighters and according to Ryan, “Alejandro’s jab saved him.”
Michael SanFillipo suffered the only setback in rather shocking fashion. Matched against a 6’2” southpaw, the 5’5” 165 lb. SanFillipo came out aggressively launching the three punch salvo that O’Leary had practiced with his charge. The initial left to the body was followed by a right to the head. Michael’s final left was followed by a cry of pain as his arm dangled at his side. With an obviously dislocated shoulder, the referee stopped hostilities before the opponent could become hostile. The ringside physician deftly repositioned his humerus into the shoulder joint, greatly alleviating Michael’s pain.
Three fighters were given byes into the second round. They were Patrick Byrne (152 lb. Novice), Terry Ferguson (178 lb. Novice), and Anthony Pegues. The schedule for week 3 is as follows. Opponents are not announced until shortly before the fight.
