(New Rochelle, NY) — The crime rate in the City of New Rochelle remains historically low, according to 2010 statistics released this week by the New Rochelle Police Department. In 2010, Part I crimes decreased 12% overall from 2009. New Rochelle ranks as the fourth safest city among cities its size nationally, marking the tenth consecutive year it has achieved top five status. New Rochelle also ranks safest among comparably-sized municipalities in New York State and Westchester County.
“These statistics are heartening, and a tribute to the dedication of our entire force as well as the effectiveness of our community policing model,” said Police Commissioner Patrick Carroll. “The City of New Rochelle continues to be exemplary on the national, state, and county level.” In 2010, the Department responded to over 56,000 calls for service.
Specifically, in 2010:
• Aggravated assaults down 56%
• Auto theft down 43%
• Burglary down 31%
• Larceny down 5%
There was a small increase in robbery, up 17% to 98 incidents in 2010 from 84 in 2009. “While the numeric increase is relatively small, our department is working with the community to educate our youth about the pitfalls of this crime,” Commissioner Carroll noted. “More than 15% of our
robberies involve young people and the theft of cell phones. Our goal is to educate them as to the seriousness of this crime.”
Notable accomplishments for 2010 include the installation of in-car video systems in sector cars and traffic vehicles; and recognition as a semi-finalist for the prestigious IACP/Motorola Award for Quality in Law Enforcement. This is the third such recognition in last 10 years.
