“The Laramie Project”, directed and produced by Sarah Bedrick, a senior at New Rochelle High School, will be performed for one night only on Thursday, March 3rd at 7pm in the Linda E. Kelly auditorium at New Rochelle High School, 365 Clove Road, New Rochelle, NY. It is a sold out performance.
The play “The Laramie Project” is one that resonates more seriously today than ever before. With all the political unrest about ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell’, the controversy over civil unions verses gay marriage, and the public’s outpouring of opinions on gay rights in general, “The Laramie Project” is pertinent to current American culture and politics. This is not only a beautiful piece of theatre illustrating a tragedy, but also a poignantly relevant comment on the social and political implications surrounding homosexuality, fear, and hate in our country; not to mention the recent media focus on gay teen suicides which has brought the consequences of hate and bullying to the forefront of the public’s mind.
After seeing a production of the show, Sarah Bedrick, a senior at New Rochelle High School, decided that she wanted to launch “Laramie” as a senior independent study project. She realized how much it could highlight homophobia at her high school. However after working with the script for a couple weeks, Bedrick realized that under the surface, “The Laramie Project” isn’t really about homophobia and homosexuality, it’s about bullying and hate; how anyone can be a victim of hate. The production raises issues about sexual orientation, of course, but at a deeper level this show is about love, hate, and their devastating and everlasting effects.
The cast includes: Anne Jacobs, Jasmine Castronuovo, Zack Manley, JA Ford, James Kelly, Wendy Dubner, Ginger Marshall and features vocalist Channa Gross.
