More than 100 paintings, sculpture and prints by long-time New Rochelle resident, teacher, musician and artist David Tobey will be presented at an opening reception for a solo show of his work at The White Plains Museum Gallery at 100 Martine Avenue in White Plains on Wednesday evening, March 30th from 6-8 p.m. The show will run through June 15, 2011.
At the reception Tobey will perform on violin with keyboard artist Kirk Ehrenreich, which he regularly does at all of his receptions, and often with visiting artists from his alma mater, Juilliard or from the Westchester Philharmonic, where he performs on violin regularly in their concerts. Everyone is cordially invited to the party to see the art, and to enjoy live music, refreshments and interesting conversation with artists, musicians, educators and others who are expected to attend. Admission is free.
David, who has called New Rochelle his home for over two decades, teaches music at both the Albert Leonard and Isaac Young middle schools, and has been the Queen City’s Middle School Orchestra Director for the past 13 years. He has collaborated in a number of published video projects featuring New Rochelle students in social studies, dance and other subjects with cinematographer Charles Hipser; and he holds a Master’s Degree in Art is from The College of New Rochelle. In addition to teaching music full-time, he taught art in summer sessions in New Rochelle schools and was a co-director of The New Rochelle Council on The Arts 2005-2007, as well as a juror for the NRCA’s recent Utopioptix exhibition & awards competition at the Lumen Winter Gallery in the New Rochelle Public Library in May, 2010.
Being a member of the Westchester Philharmonic, David’s most recent exhibition of his art in New Rochelle was in November ’09, and was a benefit for the Phil, held at the first of the New Rochelle Business Improvement District’s art galleries, BID Gallery 542 on Main Street, followed by a three-month showing of his paintings, sculpture & prints at a private home in the north end of the city that was also a benefit show for the orchestra.
Practically all of Tobey’s solo shows, both in Westchester and in New York City have been benefits for organizations he supports, including the Phil, The Juilliard School (where he graduated with his Bachelor of Music degree in 1975), The American Cancer Society, The National Chess Foundation and others; and this exhibition is no exception. The Friends of the White Plains Library and The White Plains Library Foundation will each receive 20% of proceeds from all artwork sales for the run of the show through June 15th.
