Third annual event brings together students, parents for night of learning
On Monday April 11th, New Rochelle High School will host the third annual Family University at New Rochelle High School from 6-9:30 pm
Family University is a captivating evening that promotes awareness of the challenges facing high school and middle school students and their families. The event is co- sponsored by New Rochelle FOCUS, Safe Schools/Healthy Students, the New Rochelle High School PTSA and the PTAs of Albert Leonard and Isaac E. Young middle schools.
During Family University, parents and students attend separate workshops on specific issues of interest. Topics include “Less Arguing and More Communication” and “Strategies for Social and Emotional Success” for parents and “Wacky Stress” “Police Encounters” and “Living Online” for students.
Parents and students share dinner together and finish the evening with an address from a nationally-acclaimed keynote speaker. This year parents will hear from psychologist and best-selling author Dr. Anthony Wolf on “Parenting Today’s Teenagers.” High school students will learn that “10 Seconds is all it Takes to Change a Life Forever” from Bobby Petrocelli and middle schoolers will hear about “The Power of Acceptance” from Ty Sells, who uses comedy and storytelling to inspire young people. New this year is a Spanish track/workshop and keynote for Latino parents presented in Spanish, “Mejorar la Communication en la Familia Latina” by Dr. Leo Leiderman.
“Each year our numbers increase due to the quality of the workshops and the variety of the topics offered”, said Bruce Kelly, Coalition Coordinator for New Rochelle FOCUS. “It’s a great evening for families. It sparks conversation between parent and child, which is so important to establishing healthy relationships.”
The cost for Family University is $5 per person which includes a box dinner courtesy of Applebees. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged as workshops close out quickly.
