An estimated 1,500 fans packed the Hynes Center at Iona College for the Boys Midget Basketball & Girls Winter Basketball Championships sponsored by New Rochelle Parks & Recreation and the City School District on Wednesday, April 6th. William V. Zimmermann, Commissioner of Parks & Recreation and Kelly Johnson, Deputy Commissioner of Parks & Recreation were on hand for the final games along with Assistant Schools Superintendent Jeffrey Korostoff.
The noise from the fans was deafening as parents, family and classmates cheered on their teams.
The Girls Championships was won by Ward School, coached by Mike Sgobbo & Al Tarantino, which defeated Webster School, led by Coach Dave Bergamini, 25-10. The MVP was Eliana Silk of Ward School. Other Girls League teams included Columbus School, Davis School, Holy Family School, Jefferson School, Remington Boys & Girls Club, and Trinity School.
The Boys Championships was won by the Mascaro Unit of the Boys & Girls Clubs of NR led by Coach Sean Oliver which defeated Trinity School led by Coach Teir Morris, 43-28. The MVP was Mahkel Wilson. The Boys League teams included Columbus School, Davis School, Jefferson School, Remington Boys & Girls Club, Ward School, and Webster School.
