Major Fire at Huguenot Yacht Club in New Rochelle

Written By: Talk of the Sound News

Three dry-docked boats caught fire at the Huguenot Yacht Club early this morning spreading a massive cloud of smoke through out the south end of New Rochelle. The New Rochelle Fire Department had four engines and two ladder trucks on the scene at Harbor Lane near Glen Island.

Firefighters at the scene reported significant problems getting water to the scene of the fire due to low pressure from the hydrants located near the yacht club. Firemen had to stretch hose from the corner of Weyman Avenue and Pelham Road to the Glen Island Bridge where the marina is located. The Fire Department requested the U.S. Coast Guard and the Westchester County Health Department to the scene to monitor the water runoff into the Long Island Sound.

The first call came in around 5;00 a.m. The fire was still not declared under control by 8:30am. There were no reports of injuries. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.

A woman answering the telephone at the Huguenot Yacht Club said access to the club was still closed off but anEaster Egg Hunt at noon today were still on.

  1. I’m guessing, in this tough
I’m guessing, in this tough environment with gas approaching $5 a gallon, arson.

  2. fire
Call came in little after 6 am. Three large boats, fully involved with other boats close.Firefighters got water on fire immediatly and moved what they could away.Smoke blanketed the entire area and the men fought hard to keep it to the boats already involved.Fire was all but out by 8 oclock with small pockets burning below deck on one stubborn boat.Very dirty hard fought fire, intense heat and chocking smoke with small explosions thrown in.Well done NRFD.

    1. great update
      Thanks for the additional info.

NRFD took some aerial photos from the bucket to capture images of the entire scene from above. Would love to see those photos; otherwise it was very hard to see what was going on with all the smoke.
