One Man Wounded in Gunfight at the OK Corral — New Rochelle Style

Written By: Robert Cox

361MainShooting 1Shortly before midnight last night, New Rochelle police responded to a report of shots fired at 361 Main Street. Eric Landrine, a New Rochelle man, well-known to New Rochelle police, was found at the scene with a bullet wound in his leg.

A review of video surveillance footage showed Landrine and another man Marlon Scott circling each other screaming at each other while holding handguns. The second man shot Landrine in the leg prompting him to fire indiscriminately. Wounded, Landrine then ran out of the building and handed the weapon to a female who took the handgun and hid it. All of this was captured on the video surveillance which led to Landrine’s arrest. Marlon Scott fled the scene and is currently at large. The woman, identity unknown at this time, was arrested on charges related to hindering prosecution.

Landrine was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx. His condition is unknown at this time. He is in stabled condition with a shattered femur. He still refuses to cooperate with police.

A woman familiar with the incident who did not wish to be identified told Talk of the Sound that moments for the shooting occurred several children were in the vicinity.

Sources tell Talk of the Sound, Landrine is a known drug dealer. One source called him a “public menace”. Earlier in the week Landrine was beaten and stabbed on North Avenue but refused to cooperate with police. Landrine’s assailant stabbed him with a screw driver near Goffman’s Deli at 374 North Avenue.

Eric Landrine was directly involved in setting off a melee at the Hartley Houses in March 2010. Landrine was caught by New Rochelle police selling drugs in front of a convenience store at Horton Avenue and Brook Street. As police went to arrest Landrine, things turned ugly and police from all over New Rochelle responded to the scene:

A melee broke out at the corner Horton Avenue and Brook Street in New Rochelle shortly after 5 PM Saturday, just took blocks from City Hall. When an officer at the scene put of a call for “officer needs assistance”, police dispatchers took the highly unusual step of ordering all units to respond. Police, including the Harbor Patrol Unit responded. Four arrests were made. The police entered the area in force and then withdrew to avoid escalating the situation further. In the aftermath, broken glass littered the intersection and residents were gathered in groups throughout the area discussing the incident.

Channel 12 News reported on the incident as well:

The family members and neighbors of an alleged drug dealer say police officers used excessive force against the suspect over the weekend.

An angry mob stormed New Rochelle police headquarters Saturday, claiming officers had their knees against Eric Landrine’s chest and used night sticks to beat him while trying to make an arrest.

Police say they received a tip that Landrine was in possession of crack cocaine. According to officers, “necessary force” was used against Landrine when he tried to flee his arrest.

Landrine faces two felony assault charges. Police say drug charges will likely be filed against him.

361MainShooting 2Housing officers normally patrol the area where the shooting took place but due to reductions in the size of the police force housing officers have been reassigned to other parts of New Rochelle. The department is down over two dozen officers since 2008. Another factor impacting manpower are restrictions on overtime, especially in the 4p to 12p shift.

Over the past 24 months there have been numerous shootings, stabbings and even a machete attack in downtown New Rochelle and surrounding area. Three people have died and numerous others have been wounded. Community leaders in the downtown area have repeatedly requested a stepped-up police presence in the downtown area. Hundreds of people signed a petition calling for beat cops to patrol the downtown area in the wake of the Kevin Williams murder. The petition was ignored.
