An elderly woman in a wheelchair was hit by a car this afternoon as she was crossing North Avenue near Anderson Street in downtown New Rochelle,

The woman was riding a motorized wheelchair as she tried to cross North Avenue when she was hit by a black Pontiac heading south. The woman was thrown out of the chair by the impact of the oncoming vehicle. People in the area ran to her aid until the New Rochelle Police, Fire and EMS crews arrived.

Witnesses said the driver of the car that hit the woman had the green light and that it appeared like the wheelchair might have accelerated too fast down the ramp.

The driver was arrested by members of the New Rochelle Police. Reason not known at this time. The woman was taken to Sound Shore Medical Center with a possible broken arm and cuts to her legs.

The crosswalk in this area was just relined by the DPW after a complaint by an observant local resident who noticed the painted lines in the crosswalk were faded.
