In the article, Nightmare on Stephenson Boulevard: Why Did Patrick Hickey Have So Much Pull?, Talk of the Sound reported that Patrick Hickey’s father drove drunk and killed a girl and that Patrick Hickey grew up on Rhodes Street.
In preparing this article, several sources told Talk of the Sound that Patrick Hickey’s father was the driver of the car 30 years ago including a close relative of the victim. Since the story ran several long-time New Rochelle residents familiar with the incident have come forward to say that it was the uncle not the father who drove the car the killed the girl. Further, that the driver was arrested and served about a year in jail. After some effort to sort this out Talk of the Sound has concluded that the original sources had confused the uncle and the father and the story has been edited to reflect that. Further that the confusion may have extended to which Hickey family lived on Rhodes Street so that sentence has been stricken from this article.
Why have you not corrected
Why have you not corrected the statements that the Hickey uncle was responsible for this terrible accident. The information about the uncle is as incorrect as the father involved. Do a little further investigative reporting and stop relying on info from unreliable people—-but that is your MO. Wake up.
please share
There is no need to be mysterious. If you have some contrary information please share it and I will consider it. You can post it here or contact me directly.
Shoot first ask questions later.
Your sources are terribad. How can “Several” sources (Which was probably one)be inaccurate on such a major event. I like reading talk of the sound and going back and discussing with my friends about how wrong about stuff you are. Too many times you write things that have no source to back it up.
the event was about 35 years ago…
I suppose one reason people might genuinely believe something to be true but be incorrect is that it was a long time ago, people’s memory’s get hazy. When I have three different people saying the same thing, people from that neighborhood, I tend to accept that information. If I later get different information I will address that with an editor’s note or a correction, as is the case here.
Knowing what I know now, I would have just left it out of the story altogether because it is not central to the particular article or the story overall. My error in including that information does not change the fact that Patrick Hickey is a seriously screwed up individual who, in my view, conspired with government officials to harass, terrorize and imprison an innocent woman. There is a special place in hell for a person who would do something like that regardless of whether his father, his uncle or someone drove drunk and killed a girl 35 years ago.
If you believe there are some news outlets in the world that do not ever make an error you should list them here. I will be sure to read them regularly. In the meantime, we will do what ever other news organization does — we go with what we have and, if there is an error, we address it forthrightly as I have done here.
correction to the correction to the correction
Talk of the sound business as usual. Print whatever the hell comes to mind. How about a correction to this statement? ” I met with Suzanne Ribando for one, long in-depth interview. I used my notes to identify records to obtain to verify certain information she provided. As is evident from the articles, almost the entire series is based on police incident reports, official statements to NRPD, trial transcripts and depositions. In other words most of my information is coming from the New Rochelle Police Department, the New York State Unified Court System and depositions at which the witnesses were represented by counsel.”
Maybe write…Correction, I just write whatever the hell people tell me.
Once again you have the wrong
Once again you have the wrong information. This Hickey family that you so slandered is not at all connected to the accident which occurred. Not the father and not the uncle. Hope you print another correction.
verify your sources before
verify your sources before you are so eager to print
I know for a fact that his
I know for a fact that his uncle was not involved in this accident. Where did he get this “so-called information?”
