Written By: Robert Cox

WalterVanderberg and NRPDWalter J. Vanderberg, age 32, of 26 Fairview Place, was arrested by New Rochelle police this past summer. Talk of the Sound only recently became aware that Vanderberg is an employee of the New Rochelle Department of Public Works.

Vanderberg was arrested on July 23rd, 2011 for driving without a license. At the time, Talk of the Sound reported that a woman in a wheelchair was hit by a car on North Avenue in downtown New Rochelle and that the driver of the car that hit her had been arrested. The woman was later identified as Helen Howard of Union Avenue in New Rochelle.

The woman was riding a motorized wheelchair as she tried to cross North Avenue when she was hit by a black Pontiac heading south. The woman was thrown out of the chair by the impact of the oncoming vehicle. People in the area ran to her aid until the New Rochelle Police, Fire and EMS crews arrived.

Witnesses said the driver of the car that hit the woman had the green light and that it appeared like the wheelchair might have accelerated too fast down the ramp.

Talk of the Sound has been informed that there have been numerous issues involving Vanderberg and his lack of a drivers license. At one point he had a job with the City as a driver when he did not have a drivers license and was later demoted, sources say.

  1. Reducing the Workforce
At this rate we will not have to worry about reducing the DPW workforce. Is this the definition of attrition?
