Here’s a math challenge, who can figure this out?

Written By: Talk of the Sound News

I buried this in reply earlier, but thought someone might enjoy a challenge today so here’s a little math question for everyone.

With Spertus behind by 142 votes out of the 1372 votes tallied (68% of the total), how many votes are left to count?

btw, I’m putting this at the 7th grade level as I’m not sure my 6th grader could figure it out.

And let’s see your work for extra credit.

  1. I think this might be too easy so here’s more
I think this might be too easy for you all so here’s a supplemental question.

What percentage of the remaining votes does Ilyse need to receive in order to win?

Could the race end in a tie?

Any takers? This is basic math that I hope someone, besides me, can figure out.

Someone else that should also be able to see that the school district would be better off using a fixed assessment total rather than an unknown assessment total when proposing its budget.

      1. Nice job Tink, now how about those bonus questions?
Nice job Tink & thanks for signing up at Talk of the Sound. I got 646 but I’m sure that’s due to rounding.

To get the answer you needed to know that 1372 votes equaled 68% and then set-up an algebraic equation such as 68/100 = 1372/x which is the same as 137200 = 68x & then divide both sides by 68 to give you the total number of voters or 2018 and then you need to subtract the number of votes already counted 1372 to reach 646.

The 142 had nothing to do with the question, “With Spertus behind by 142 votes out of the 1372 votes tallied (68% of the total), how many votes are left to count?” but it does factor in to get the bonus questions.

How about those bonus questions? What percentage of the remaining votes does Ilyse need to receive in order to win? And could the race end in a tie?
