Delays, detours expected in area of Burling Lane, Garden Street and Station Plaza
A New York State Thruway Authority construction project to relocate utility lines on the North Avenue Bridge will begin on February 23. The North Avenue Utility Relocation Project is estimated to last 18 months and will impact North Avenue especially at the intersections of Burling Lane, Garden Street, and Station Plaza North.
The work will begin on February 23 with minor closings on North Avenue and the closing of Burling Lane from North Avenue to May Street. Burling Lane will be closed to traffic but a pedestrian lane will remain open at all times. The magnitude of work will increase on April 17 with alternating lane closures on North Avenue, southbound and northbound, causing traffic disruptions in the area. Effort will be made to curtail construction during commuting hours; however, motorists are advised that delays are probable and alternate routes are recommended. Users of the New Rochelle train station and Intermodal Center in particular should plan accordingly.
A page has been established on the City’s website for further information during the length of the project www.newrochelleny.com/northaveconstruction.
This project will relocate electric, cable, telephone, water, fiber optic, and natural gas lines from the existing North Avenue Bridge to a parallel span that was constructed in 2010. The work on the utility lines is expected to be completed by May 2013, conditions permitting. The next phase of the project, the demolition and replacement of the North Avenue Bridge, is tentatively scheduled to begin in 2015.
The contract for the utility relocation was awarded to Perfetto Contracting Company Inc, Brooklyn, whose bid of $2.4 million was the lowest of six bids submitted.
