Iona Gaels, Leading The Nation In Scoring and Assists, Go Tonight Against Fairfield on ESPNU

The Iona College men’s basketball team (22-6, 13-3 MAAC) hosts Fairfield (17-11, 12-4 MAAC) at the Hynes Center on ESPNU at 9 PM. The match up features two teams at the top of the MAAC standings both vying for the top seed in next weekend’s conference championship.

With a win tonight, Iona can clinch a tie for the MAAC Regular Season Championship and the No. 1 seed in the tournament next weekend. Iona has not won a MAAC regular season since 2001.

As a team, Iona’s 83.11 points per game average ranks No. 1 in the NCAA. The Maroon & Gold has scored just seven more than No. 2 North Carolina through 28 games, The Gaels have reached 90 points in 10 of team’s 28 contests this season while also posting 89 and 88 in wins over Maryland and Richmond.

Iona maintained its national lead in assists per game after 23 assists vs. Nevada. UNLV ranks No. 2, just under an assist per game less than the Maroon & Gold. The Gaels have recorded at least 20 assists in 16 games this year two more than last season’s total.

With 283 assists in 28 games, senior Scott Machado maintains his NCAA lead after his sixth 15+ assist effort of the season vs. Nevada. He holds a 10.11 per game average. Machado and North Carolina’s Kendall Marshall (9.82/g) remain the lone performers averaging nine or more assists per game. T
