New Rochelle, NY – March 8, 2012 – Sound Shore Medical Center (SSMC) is pleased to announce that its Cancer Program has received continued accreditation, with commendation, by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons (CoC). This accreditation has been maintained since 2005 and certifies the high quality of SSMC’s comprehensive multidisciplinary oncology care. It also affirms an ongoing dedication to providing the best in today’s cancer treatment.
Sound Shore Medical Center voluntarily participates in the CoC program that includes quality assessment and data collection. This vital data is used to develop effective educational interventions; thus improving cancer care outcomes at the national, state and local level. It is important to note that less than 25% of the 1,500 U.S. hospitals are approved by the CoC, while collectively, these same hospitals are responsible for approximately 70% of the cancer cases treated each year.
The SSMC Cancer Program also includes a state-of-the-art Breast Center that provides clinical and support services – from screening and diagnosis to treatment and counseling. In addition, SSMC offers ongoing patient education and support groups, including Caring Circles, Us Too International (prostate cancer), Look Good/Feel Better and Girls Night Out (breast cancer). SSMC, in partnership with the American Cancer Society and TransCare, has just added another vital community offering – Road to Recovery. The program provides free transportation to approved cancer appointments for individuals who need this assistance.
Sound Shore Medical Center offers another support service, its dedicated cancer telephone line. By calling 914.365.4956, individuals can access information on cancer programs and services available at SSMC as well as throughout Westchester County.
