A terrific new Brazilian Barbecue luncheonette at 496 Main Street, at the intersection with Lawton Street, is adding still more international flair to the downtown dining experience in New Rochelle. br Brothers on Main offers authentic Churrasco meats including skirt steaks, beef ribs, pork loin and sirloin steak as well as regional side dishes including plantains, rice and beans and yuca. In a word, the food is “saboroso” or “tasty and delicious”.
A lunch buffet, priced by the pound, offers a great way to sample the various meats and side dishes. Don’t miss the Passion Fruit Mousse for dessert.
The brothers behind br Brothers on Main are John and Rafael De Freitas. John previously worked as the manager at Posto 22 on Division Street.
“We will be having our official grand opening once our signs are installed,” says older brother John De Freitas. “In the meantime business has been good. We are doing a lot of takeout.”
Churrasco is a South American-style rotisserie barbecue. The term is a rough translation of the Portuguese word for “barbecue”.
The style originated with the gaúchos of southern Brazil, traditionally from the Pampa region. Most parts of Brazil use charcoal but further south, close to the borders of Argentina and Uruguay, wood embers are used.
“We use charcoal for more flavor”, says John De Freitas. “Most of Brazil goes with charcoal these days”.
The brothers could not be happier to have opened in the Queen City.
“Ever since we came from Brazil 14 years ago, we adopted New Rochelle as our hometown and that’s why there could be no other place better than New Rochelle to bring a little of our Culture through our Native Cuisine,” said Rafael De Freitas.
The menu was designed by executive Chef Ricardo Santana from Salvador, Bahia.
“Ricardo brings the twist to this restaurant” said John De Freitas. “You can only find his dishes, desserts, breads, and traditional Brazilian snacks here at BR Brothers on Main.”

br Brothers on Main is more good news for the second of New Rochelle’s developing “restaurant rows” which between them now offer cuisines that include Peruvian, Caribbean, Mexican, Italian, Indian, American and now Brazilian. Division Street with Post 22, Cormondel and Brickyard Bistro has gotten most of the attention in recent years but with the addition of Alvin & Friends, a revitalized McKiernan’s, Cholo’s and the Mexican Corner Restaurant (Gnarly Vine is just around the corner on Main Street), Lawton Street now boasts more restaurants.
