New Rochelle Public Library Events in April: Magic, Comedy, Films, GreeNR Chat, Pre-School Programs

Library Presents Magic And Comedy Show For Families

A free, live performance by comic magician Jim McClenahan will be featured at the New Rochelle Public Library on Saturday, April 14th, at 2:00 pm. The popular magician-comedian is returning to the Ossie Davis Theater with new tricks and surprises to delight children of all ages – and their parents and grandparents. Jim’s terrific blend of awesome tricks, side splitting jokes and high levels of energy guarantees a great time. His warm presentation, wacky stunts and zany humor is a winning combination each time he performs. Seating for the performance is on a first-come, first served basis, to the 145-seat capacity of the theater.

The free program is a BID Family Day event, made possible through a partnership of the New Rochelle Downtown BID (Business Improvement District) with the New Rochelle Public Library, the City School District & PTA Council, and the Department of Parks & Recreation.

Holocaust Remembrance Day Observed With Showing Of Film: The Stranger

Holocaust Remembrance Day, on April 19, will be observed at the New Rochelle Public Library with a free showing of the 1946 film, The Stranger, at 7:00 pm. Directed by Orson Welles, this classic noir thriller is considered the first Hollywood film to deal directly with the Holocaust. The story begins when the War Crimes Commission sends an investigator (Edward G. Robinson) to a small Connecticut town to check out a schoolteacher (Orson Welles) who may or may not be an infamous Nazi war criminal, and is now married to the daughter of a Supreme Court Justice (Loretta Young). The film is in black and white and runs 115 minutes. Following the free showing, audience members are invited to participate in a discussion led by film librarian Chris Poggiali.

League Of Women Voters’ “Coffee & Conversation” Features Sustainability Coordinator

Just in time for Earth Day, the April 20th League of Women Voter’s Coffee and Conversation will feature Deborah Newborn, New Rochelle’s Sustainability Coordinator. Ms. Newborn will discuss progress on the City’s award-winning GreeNR Sustainability Plan and what if means for the future of our community. The free program runs from 9:30 am to 11:00 am. Free Programs For Infants And Preschoolers At Libraries

Free programs for preschool children continue to be offered at the New Rochelle Public Library and the Huguenot Children’s Library (HCL) though May, 2012. Participation is drop-in, on a first-come, first-served basis. The free programs, made possible by the Friends of the New Rochelle Public Library and the Partnership for the Huguenot Children’s Library, do not take place on days the New Rochelle Public Schools are closed for vacations.

At the Main Library: Music and Movement with Nora Maher, for children ages 12 months to 35 months, meets every Wednesday from April 18 through May 23. Parents may choose between two sessions: 10:45 – 11:15 am or 11:30 – 12 noon. Yoga Tots with Susan Fried, for toddlers 18 – 35 months and their parent or care-giver, meets Saturdays, April 21 – May 26, from 10:00 – 10:30 am. 3, 4, 5’s – Stories & Crafts, for children ages three to five years, meets every Monday, through May 21, from 10:00 – 10:45 am, and every Tuesday, through May 22, from 2:00 – 2:45 pm. Toddler Time, for children age two years, meets every Friday, through May 18, from 10:30 – 11:00 am. Nursery Rhyme Time, for children ages 12 months to 24 months, meets every Friday, through May 18, from 9:30 – 9:50 am.
