(New Rochelle, NY) — Recently the staff of Sound Shore Medical Center’s Schaffer Extended Care Center (Schaffer) hosted their panacea for the winter doldrums – the 14th annual Interlude. This much-anticipated, St. Patrick’s Day-themed event provided more than 50 residents and their guests a very special evening – one of food, music, dancing and camaraderie and especially the wearing of the Green.
Since the Interlude is one of two major, semi-formal events on the busy recreational calendar at Schaffer, staff gives special attention to every detail. Joined by student volunteers from New Rochelle High School, the Recreation Therapy Department transformed the Sound Shore Medical Center’s dining room into a visual feast for residents and leprechauns alike.
The attendees, most of whom wore green including shamrock festooned hats, enjoyed the musical entertainment of Georgeanne Mallard. The evening’s menu included shepherd’s pie as well as fish and chips. After dining, many danced to the familiar music of favorite tunes – and everyone had a wonderful time, particularly singing along to “When Irish Eyes are Smiling”.
The highlight of the evening was the recognition of Schaffer’s outgoing Medical Director Richard P. Barone, MD. The Executive Resident Council Committee members, Jerome Kanter and William Divernieri presented Dr. Barone a plaque that read, “We will never forget you or your compassion. Thank you for everything. The Residents of Helen and Michael Schaffer Extended Care Center”. It was a moving tribute to Dr. Barone’s years of service and caring.
This semi-formal is just one of the many special events enjoyed by Schaffer Extended Care Center’s short-term rehabilitation patients and long-term residents.
