SoundShoreEntance(New Rochelle, NY) — Sound Shore Medical Center of Westchester (SSMC) is pleased to join the Fifth Annual National Healthcare Decisions Day to highlight the importance of advance healthcare decision making

As a participating organization, Sound Shore Medical Center will have members of the Ethics Committee available to speak about the importance of advance healthcare planning. They will be in the lobby of SSMC and Schaffer Extended Care on National Healthcare Decisions Day, April 16 from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM. The Committee members will provide free information that will guide discussions about this important subject with family, friends and healthcare providers. SSMC encourages everyone to talk with family today – make your healthcare wishes known.

Daniel Pomerantz, MD, FACP, Co-Chair of SSMC’s Ethics Committee, said, “National Healthcare Decisions Day helps highlight the need to make plans for the time when an individual may not be capable of making decisions regarding their healthcare. Naming a healthcare proxy agent and informing that person of your wishes is the most important gift one can give.”

The New York Healthcare Proxy permits individuals to name someone else to make decisions about their medical care, including decisions about life support. It appoints someone to speak for you any time you are unable to make your own medical decisions, not only at the end of life.
