NEW ROCHELLE, NY — LuisaMariaGarciaSophomore Luisa Maria Garcia, a Communication Arts major in the School of Arts & Sciences at The College of New Rochelle, was one of two undergraduates selected by The Alliance for Women in Media (AWM) Foundation and Ford Motor Company Fund as a scholarship recipient of the “Emerging Voices” program. Luisa was recognized at a Gracie Awards Luncheon on May 23, 2012, in Los Angeles, CA.

The “Emerging Voices” Scholarship program consists of a $2,500 scholarship, made payable directly to The College of New Rochelle in the name of Ford Motor Company Fund.
Her success has not surprised her professors. Dr. Michael Quinn, Communication Arts professor says, “Luisa is not only developing technical skills by working in our TV Studio, she is also improving her skills as a journalist in classes ranging from Newswriting to Political Science. She has also taken advantage of our Internship Program at major media organizations such as CBS and ABC.”

Ms. Garcia has concentrated her studies in broadcasting and the print media, but she adds one of the best things about CNR is the flexibility to take courses outside her major. “Studying different areas,” she says, “has broadened my horizons and enhanced my ability to reason critically.”

After graduation Ms. Garcia plans on seeking a career in on-air journalism. “At The College of New Rochelle, and as a Communications major, I have learned about news writing, video shooting, editing, and more. And while still an undergraduate, I have had the opportunity to take the training and knowledge I’ve acquired in the classrooms out in the field and into real life situations. That’s really neat.”

Luisa Maria Garcia will produce three to four separate pieces of content for AWM between June 1, 2012 and October 1, 2012. One of these pieces by Luisa Maria will be written about her experience attending the Gracie Awards, and one of the pieces will be published in an upcoming AWM Special Report. What she writes will also be posted on www.allwomeninmedia.org as well as AWM’s social media outlets.
