Iona Prep’s varsity baseball team was recently named the MSG Varsity’s Team of the Year for the spring season. The Gaels had a tremendous season as they defeated Fordham Prep 9-2 in the CHSAA Class “AA” City Championship on June 8, 2012. This was the Prep’s second baseball championship in school history, the first coming in 2003. However, the win was especially important because it was the final game for longtime Head Coach Fred Gallo who announced his retirement during the Gaels’ playoff run.
The winning pitcher of the championship game, Tim McCarthy ’12, who will attend Temple University in fall on a baseball scholarship, was interviewed on MSG Varsity, Channel 14 for iO subscribers, a few days after the victory.
The varsity Gaels, along with the freshman and JV teams, were also awarded team and coaching staff sportsmanship the for 2012 presented by the North Shore Baseball Umpires Association, which cover all Iona Prep and CHSAA games. This was the first time in the history of the awards that all three levels – freshman, JV and varsity – from one school won the awards.
