Crime Coverup in New Rochelle

EDITOR’S NOTE: Clarification on “Crime Cover Up” Story and a Retraction and Apology

On Thursday, August 2, two Mercedes Benz were stolen from Pepe Luxury Cars on Boston Post Road. The report was carried on the police scanner and was confirmed by a newly hired security guard on Friday morning, August 3. The security guard was hired immediately after the theft to work from 9pm to 7am every day……sort of like securing the barn after the horse escapes!.

The theft of the cars was not written up or reported in any news outlet; and, when asked about the incident report for this crime, the New Rochelle Police Department responded with: “no such report.” Needless to say, Pepe has not returned phone calls regarding this matter.

What’s up with the NRPD? Don’t the people have a right to know what crimes are committed in the area? Neighborhood associations are up in arms about this coverup. The more they know, the more security measures they can take to protect their own properties.

It’s a sad case when a police department is not forthcoming with information that could prove invaluable to residents.

  1. apology
Since I had little information to go on, I unfortunately got the date wrong — which eventually snowballed into a larger problem. Consider this a retraction of my statements, and I apologize to the NRPD. However, I stll have a concern that there was a larceny involving 2 vehicles at the Mercedes dealership in my neighborhood.

  2. correction
Just discovered that the theft occurred on July 30 (according to crimemapping.com). That makes the non-reporting even worse!

    1. It means more than that…
It also means that when I made a FOIL request to NRPD for this incident on Aug. 2nd the reason they said “no such record” is because there was no such record. There was not a cover up at all.

Had I requested the July 30 data, the records for the incident would have been located.

Your comment that you had the date wrong does not make the “non-reporting worse”. It makes it non-existant.

You owe the NRPD an apology for making this sort of serious allegation when you had the basic facts wrong.

That the incident was not in the crimemapping.com web site is a function of a technical failure in getting the data from NRPD to that company, not a conspiracy.

I will tell you that NRPD provides a complete set of data to SpotCrime, the service we work with, and this incident on July 30th WAS in the data we received. This occurred BEFORE any questions were raised about any idea of a “cover up”.

Put simply, there was no cover up and you need to retract that statement.

That does not change the underlying concern you expressed — that there was a larceny involving 2 vehicles at the dealership near Sunhaven.

I will add one more thing.

For those people who are interested in getting a list of all incidents from NRPD each day we offer a service called SpotCrime. You can sign up for a daily alert, you can specific a range such as within 2 miles from your house or place of business, and, unlike the crimemapping.com service used by the City of New Rochelle, the data is a complete set of all incidents.

For those recall, the idea of using ANY sort of crime map software came from Talk of the Sound several years ago. The NRPD embraced what I had recommended, using crimemapping.com. Police Commissioner Carroll gave an excellent presentation on crimemapping.com. The Mayor was horrified and did not want the data available. He called it an “anti-marketing campaign” for New Rochelle (apparently a safe and informed citizenry, aware of any crime patterns in their area, is a secondary consideration for Mr. Bramson).

When the Mayor rejected crimemapping.com, the CEO of SpotCrime contacted Talk of the Sound and offered to make the same service available for free. I worked with the company to get them all of the data every day with the cooperation of the NRPD. We immediately began posting every incident from every day.

Last December, the City quietly turned crimemapping.com for New Rochelle back on; there was no press release or fanfare.

The difference, however, is that the data is first scrubbed before being made available to crimemapping.com so that there is a large gap in the number of incidents reported in SpotCrime v. CrimeMapping.com.

Both work but if you want a complete set of data where the City is not directly involved in trying to control what information goes into the system, then sign up for SpotCrime.

  3. Pepe silent for a reason
Now we know why it’s not New Rochelle (NewRoc) Mercedes. Pepe didn’t want the stigma of publicizing its New Rochelle home. Pepe must feel publicizing this event will deter current and future clients. Contrary to North-End pablum; New Rochelle’s diversity is not always positive.

    1. You mean Section 8 housing
You mean Section 8 housing residents, illegal aliens, welfare recipients, food stamp users and homeless people don’t buy Mercedes Benz?
Why in Brooklyn the Russian have been known to park their Mercedes Illegally in front of the Supper Markets get out in their fur coats and buy Caviar and other delicacies with US Government subsidies.
Why can’t our losers buy Mercedes.

  4. 100% right
You are 100% right. People have the right to know what is going on in their neighborhood so they can know when to be on high alert. I live in the city’s West End neighborhood and alot of crime happens here. Especially larceny and no one really knows what is going on around here so crimes like this keep on occuring. So many things have been stolen off of my property and from my garage such as a fishing rod recently and 3 bicycles over the years and my house was broken into twice. If the residents are not notified about what is going on, it makes it more difficult to prevent things like this from happening.

  5. crime coverup
Nunya – The turnover at Pepe is unbelievable — they fire people left and right!

  6. in regards to this from what
in regards to this from what i heard is that the keys were left in both cars at there were stolen and mercedes fired a few people after this incident. so there is no need to worry

  7. Are you surprised?
    Eastender…Are you really surprised?

As soon as someone who knows the right people gets an internal investigation in New Rochelle this is what will continue to plague our city…The corruption is everywhere!

    1. And the sad part is, there
And the sad part is, there are probably many more crimes that are covered up.
