NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Sound Shore Medical Center’s (SSMC) Department of Medicine is pleased to announce its Medical Residency Program’s selection of Chief Residents for the 2012-2013 academic year. Two standouts from its 2012 Class, Drs. Bubu Banini and Diana De Jesus, were selected to serve as Co-chief Residents.
As Chief Residents, Drs. Banini and De Jesus will oversee the activities of the residents of the Internal Medicine and Transitional Training Programs. This includes planning resident schedules, in compliance with the American Board of Internal Medicine Guidelines; meeting educational goals, organizing educational conferences and actively participating in the supervision of Medical and Transitional residents in both inpatient and outpatient settings. In addition, they will serve as departmental representatives. Drs. Banini and De Jesus will also represent SSMC with various professional organizations, including the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine.
Commenting on the selection, the Director of Medicine, Stephen Jesmajian, MD said, “Our Internal Medicine Residency Program has two exceptional doctors serving as Co-chiefs for the 2012-13 academic year. Both are well qualified to perform the duties of this important position.” He concluded, “With their talent and commitment, Sound Shore Medical Center’s Resident and Transitional interns, patients and staff will benefit. I congratulate them on their achievements.”
After an Independent Advanced Study Program in Biology and Psychology at Oxford University in England, Dr. Banini graduated with honors from Swathmore College. While pursuing her undergraduate degree, she was awarded a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Research Fellowship, a Rachel Leigh Wightman Scholarship and was named to the National Deans List. Then Dr. Banini received her MD and PhD degrees from the Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, where she received the Pennsylvania State Department of Health Outstanding Research Award and the Thomas Jefferson University Alumni Association Outstanding Graduate Student Award. Before completing her New York Medical College/Sound Shore Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency Program, she served her internship at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Banini is Board eligible in Internal Medicine.
Dr. De Jesus received her Bachelor of Science, Magna Cum Laude, from the Manila Doctors College in the Philippines before earning her medical degree from the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Medicine and Surgery in Manila. She graduated Cum Laude and was awarded Bene Meritus (high distinction) in Medical Oral Examination before performing her Medical Internship at the Chinese General Hospital in Manila, Philippines. While completing her residency in Internal Medicine through the New York Medical College/ Sound Shore Medical Center, Dr. De Jesus was selected to present her research at six scientific meetings, including earlier this year at the American College of Physicians National Scientific Meeting and the Medical Society of the State of New York. In 2011, Dr. De Jesus was the Case Contributor for the Mindful Medicine Column in the American College of Physicians Hospitalist publication. Her article was entitled, “When you look, but don’t see the diagnosis”. She is Board eligible in Internal Medicine.
Sound Shore Medical Center (SSMC) is a major teaching affiliate of New York Medical College and as such is actively engaged in preparing the next generation of physicians. The position of Chief Resident is central to that mission and is currently held by two physicians who are well qualified, dedicated and committed to the practice of medicine.
