Janet Lillian Daley, 89, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family August 30, 2012. She was born on February 27, 1923 in Syracuse, NY to the late Leslie Ward and Ruth Margaret Catherine Jost Hemens.
Janet graduated from Sidney High School in Sidney, NY and Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY, where she was class valedictorian. She moved to her first teaching job at Jefferson High School in Jefferson, NY where she met and fell in love with Harold Alfred Daley.
After moving to New Rochelle, NY, Harold was assistant principal at New Rochelle High School while Janet stayed home to raise the children. While raising her family she also studied for her Masters Degree and went on to teach English at New Rochelle High School.
After retiring, Harold was offered the position of principal at Robinson School in Puerto Rico, and Janet followed him there where she taught English.
After retiring again, the two moved to Stockbridge, Massachusetts in the Berkshires. While there, Janet volunteered for the Tanglewood Music Center and Berkshire Theater Group. She also enjoyed reading and recording books for the blind. Some of these works now reside in the Library of Congress. As time went by, they decided to spend summers in the Berkshires and winters in Satellite Beach, Florida.
A memorial service will be held at Holland’s United Methodist Church, in Raleigh, on Saturday, September 8, 2012 at 11:00AM.
Janet is survived by her daughters, Catherine Katen and Pegi Rodemann and husband, Christopher, both of Raleigh; son, Robert Daley and wife, Elisabeth, of New Rochelle, NY; grandchildren, Kelly Katen Separack, Roger Katen II and wife, Michele, Heather Burket and husband, Christopher, Meaghan Daley, Christopher Daley, and Rachel Rodemann; and great grandchildren, Dylan and Jamison Separack.
In addition to her parents, Janet was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Alfred Daley, on May 12, 2012.
