NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The College of New Rochelle director of athletics and The Wellness Center Harold Crocker has announced the appointment of Philip Seymore as associate director of athletics and The Wellness Center. Seymore has over 20 years of experience in collegiate athletics departments and is charged with coordinating a comprehensive recruiting initiative for the entire athletic department in addition to other responsibilities.
“Phil is joining our team at CNR at the perfect time,” said vice president for student services Dr. Colette Geary. “We are embarking on a period of unprecedented growth and strategic planning at CNR and the broad range of skills and experience that Phil brings with him will prove to be an invaluable asset to us.”
In addition to his responsibilities in coordinating the College’s recruiting efforts, Seymore is tasked with mentoring the departments coaching staff, generating additional revenue for The Wellness Center, which received a LEED “Silver” rating certified by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), via programs, camps and rentals, and supervising the study hall program.
Seymore joins the Blue Angel athletic staff after spending the previous 12 years at Providence College, a member of the Big East Conference. He served as head coach for the Friars’ women’s basketball program for seven seasons, overseeing all aspects of the Division I program. He recruited on a national level and coached a First Team All-Big East recipient as well as three Big East All-Freshman Team honorees while guiding the team to its first postseason appearance in 18 years. He spent the previous five seasons as an assistant coach for the men’s team, helping the Friars reach a national ranking as high as #12, before taking over the women’s program.
Prior to his tenure at Providence, Seymore held assistant coach positions at the University of Richmond of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) and Canisius College of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), achieving notable recruiting and team success at each stop. At Richmond, Seymore and the Spiders were CAA Champions and advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament with a win over nationally-ranked University of South Carolina. While with the Golden Griffins, Seymore helped lead Canisius to three consecutive post-season appearances, including a run to the NIT Final Four in 1995 and the program’s first NCAA appearance in 51 years in 1996.
Seymore also had a distinguished playing career at Canisius, earning All-MAAC and All-Region honors his senior season, culminating in being drafted by the NBA’s New York Knicks. He was inducted into the Canisius College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1996 and was voted to Canisius’ All-Century Team in 2004. He played professionally for the Albany Patroons of the Continental Basketball Association under legendary head coach Phil Jackson, and was named to the CBA All-Star Game in 1983.
The Brooklyn, NY native earned a bachelor of arts degree in sociology with a minor in physical education from Canisius College in 1988.
