NEW YORK, NY — David Mendelowitz, a former guidance counselor and Dean of Students at the prestigious Scarsdale High School has been arrested in a prostitution-based money laundering bust.
According to a criminal complaint filed by the New York State Attorney Genreal, Mendelowitz paid for the services of prostituted women and for crack cocaine. He was arrested and charged with numerous counts of patronizing a prostitute, possession of a controlled substance and hindering prosecution, a class E felony. During the time span of his alleged criminal conduct, Mendelowitz was involved in many student programs, including Scarsdale High School’s Drug and Alcohol Task Force.
In June, Scarsdale10583.com reported on the unexpected “retirement” of Mendelowitz from Scarsdale High School. The report, ironically, notes his involved with the school’s Drug and Alcohol Task Force.
In a surprising turn of events, Weber announced that Dr. David Mendelowitz, a Dean at the high school, will retire this year. Mendelowitz has been out for several weeks due to illness and as a result of the sudden timing of his decision no remarks were prepared for the meeting.
Mendelowitz earned a PhD in Counseling at St. Johns University and came to SHS in 1997 after working as a school counselor in Sleepy Hollow and Horace Greeley. He had a wonderful rapport with students and their parents and got involved with many school activities including Signifer, Senior Options, the Drug and Alcohol Task Force and many more.

Taking action to break up a tri-state, prostitution-based money laundering operation, Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman and NYPD Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly today announced the unsealing of a 180-count indictment charging 19 individuals and one corporation with enterprise corruption and a variety of underlying crimes, including money laundering, falsifying business records, narcotics sales and prostitution. During the course of the arrests and execution of search warrants earlier today, investigators found two women who were the victims of human trafficking by two of the ringleaders of the operation. Investigators from the Attorney General’s office and the NYPD rescued the two trafficking victims from locations in Manhattan and, in coordination with Sanctuary for Families, brought them to a safe haven. The investigation is ongoing.
