NEW ROCHELLE, NY — New Rochelle police responded in force to Trinity Elementary School this morning after a report of an out-of-control student “drawing a gun”. After some initial confusion, police realized the report involved a student drawing a picture of a gun not pulling a firearm from a holster.
Sources familiar with the incident tell Talk of the Sound, this was a simple matter of a youth becoming upset, getting out of control and a school district employee following protocol by calling New Rochelle Police for a youth officer to help deal with the situation. No one was in danger and no injuries were reported.
Police scanner traffic indicated that the student had drawn a picture of a gun and the picture was taken from him. The youth become upset.
Since the Newtown Tragedy there have been several instances where school district employees failed to follow protocol and either failed to contact police or inhibited their response. At Trinity, school district employees did follow protocol and did not hesitate to bring the NRPD youth officer into the school. That half a dozen police officers responded to a minor incident is likely welcome news to most parents who would prefer an abundance of caution when it comes to the safety of their children.
