NEW ROCHELLE, NY — One of the most incredible buzzer beaters in basketball history at any level is fast becoming the stuff of legends. The video has gone viral on YouTube, picked up on ESPN and sports web sites around the world.
In the New York Section I Class AA boys basketball championship game between New Rochelle High School and Mount Vernon High School, New Rochelle ran off a 9-1 run to in final minutes but was still down 2 with 2.9 seconds to go when Khalil Edney, start of the state championship football team, heaved the ball to midcourt. Jalen David of Mount Vernon caught the ball and threw it up in the air, back across the half-court line.
With 0.1 seconds remaining, Edney caught and released the ball, dropping a 55-foot shot that was all net.
Edney told MSGVarsity after the game, “I was just praying for it to go in. That’s one of them last-second things you throw up, and it goes in.”
Edney is scheduled to appear on SportsCenter and the Today Show.
“I have school tomorrow. I’m just trying to be as normal as possible,” Edney told ESPN.
New Rochelle High School moves on to the regional semifinals where it will play Binghamton High School.
What do you think? Was this the greatest game-winning shot of all time?
