New Rochelle Veterans Thwarted Again on Armory Site

Written By: Robert Cox

It should be increasingly obvious that if New Rochelle veterans came up with a method of turning the Armory’s red bricks into gold bars, Mayor Noam Bramson would be opposed.

It did not take our new development commissioner long to join Bramson’s jihad against the Vets. Having come on board just in time to see the Mayor’s Good Profit Works fall apart, Luiz Aragon will come forward at Tuesday’s City Council meeting with the following:

RECOMMENDATION: There are many acceptable avenues leading to the generation of a proposal for the Armory site.

However, since the May 2012 attempt only generated two proposals which severely limited our choices, it would be prudent to consider a different approach to expand our vision and entice new and innovative proposals from a larger number of interested parties.

It is recommended by the Department of Development that the City of New Rochelle consider issuing a Request for Expressions of Interest (RFI) for the Armory site in the near future. The responses to the RFI should be considered and analyzed through the creation of a larger and more global urban development plan in order to better define the best programmatic use for the Armory site.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

  1. New Rochelle, Can’t We All Just Get Along!
Put personalities aside work for The Vets, The Armory and New Rochelle!

As you saw Tuesday night, the process cannot continue to be put out as a Veterans VS The Mayor battle. There will be no winner. What ever happened to the group Reimagine New Rochelle which was compromised of residents including those associated with Veterans groups, the Arts and Design and Construction that was part of this?

If there is to be any change or success the main focus needs to be on the process and the development with an emphasis with The Armory being used as a Performing Arts Center anchored by The New Rochelle Opera (The Veterans Center for the Performing Arts) with a community center both honoring and serving the post-service needs of veterans for New Rochelle and all the Vets. The veterans push should be to preserve The Armory for the vets for its history plus for jobs training, a Peer Specialist, areas to handle matters like Post Traumatic Stress and other disabilities.

It can and must be done in some way shape or form. The New Rochelle Opera along with some solid proposals for dining, entertainment and even include some market to table ideas as suggested. With the new plan for the New Rochelle Downtown Business Improvement District is moving towards a new, larger farmers market which could be a prime opportunity. The Saturday market will have raw fruits and vegetables, prepared foods and ethnic food vendors, along with entertainment every week. Who could ask for a better tie in for the people of New Rochelle? The BID’s Family Days series will be incorporated into the farmers market as well, two areas of the city with vibrant energy and creative ideas that could work off each other to help towards their success. Imagine, The City of New Rochelle selling the thoughts and ideas of The City of New Rochelle what a great idea. Marketing and Advertising 101, create conversation, create traffic and move people. The group showed some of this in their final proposal that was not given a chance to be seen by The City Council at the end of the RFP process due to poor timing and procedures on both parts.

Wednesday night I drove 45minutes with friends up to The Ridgefield Playhouse for a concert. We met at a local restaurant then went to the concert. We need something like this here in New Rochelle. Both places were buzzing and people were spending time and money. The concept is working well in many cities around us with the revitalization of several theaters. We have a lot of talented people and connections to the arts that it would only be fitting to make this happen. This can be the catalyst for the future of New Rochelle and the Echo Bay Area.

  2. Good to Finally Hear from Citizens of New Rochelle with Spines
Unfortunately, the City Council, Mayor and City Manager not only have no spines, but have no ingenuity, interest or care for the homeowners of New Rochelle, who foot 90% of all bills; businesses have either been priced out or prevented from moving into warehoused storefronts.

And sadly, this is not new. For 30 years New Rochelle management has been negligent and hoping for the next cash cow developer to bail it out, all the while sticking it to the “little people.”

Well, the “little people” are either dying off or are being forced to leave as they can no longer afford school taxes, (twice those of property taxes)with both rising at an unadulterated rate!

And furthermore, we have always relied up government services, especially those in the towns and cities of Westchester to at least not nickel and dime law enforcement, fire protection and sanitation. Sadly, they too will barely exist in the not too distant future.

The Queen City has now turned in the Joker’s.

    1. Don’t bet on it…
“The Queen City has now turned in the Joker’s.”

let’s see if Noam’s hand picked replacement is voted in when he goes to sit at the right hand of Idoni I.

New Rochelle, after 30 years of being a sewer, isn’t about to return to its place as Queen City Of The Sound with one tiny win.

  3. Bramson is a POS.
He was never going to let the Vets do anything to that building and hated the idea of saving it. Guarunteed that building will be demoloshed.

  4. The Armory
This is double speak. They are using big words to say we do not want your ideas or imput.

  5. The only vision New Rochelle has is in the rear view mirror!
Following the same flawed practices and plans has been shown not to work,

It has always been said that there are many acceptable avenues for the Armory site. The lack of vision and planning by this very administration has led to the falter and demise of the Armory and Echo Bay Project, whether intentional or not. The battle and the obstacles were known going in. The Veterans are a passionate, strong and determined group with a vision. Good Profits plan like The City of New Rochelle’s leadership and policies was flawed from the beginning. That came to light as Good Profit failed to sign an agreement on time with the City Council having to determine that the agreement with Good Profit has ended.

Since the original offering only generated two proposals which severely limited their choices, it would be prudent to reconsider the Vets proposal but not limit it to them. Fair is fair in love and war. The Department of Development for the City of New Rochelle should consider issuing a Request for Expressions of Interest (RFI) for the Armory site. Knowing this, The Vets should begin preparing their arsenal and make sure everything is done and submitted way before any deadlines. Make it impossible for the Mayor or anyone to say no to the vision. Put a new face on the proposal. Not just the Vets, have the Opera Group, the performing-arts-centered plan for the buildings along with the many other benefits of their proposal and vision stand out in the headlines. Totally remove the battle between the Vets and the Mayor from any dealings with The Armory Site. Without mentioning the Vets, the proposal was a good vision for what New Rochelle needs.

That said the same needs to be done with the entire Echo Bay Area Project. Why would they have to do new proposals for The Armory over and over again and not for Forest City and The Echo Bay Development. Too much has changed since the original 2008 Scoping Document for the proposed Echo Bay Waterfront Redevelopment that was planned for the entire area consisting of 26 Acres. The area has now seen at least three different Commissioners of Development that started with Craig King in 2008 and shrunk to about 6 acres and 4 acres for The Armory sight.

Get a fresh start, a new look. Everyone speaks of visions but has no one has sight!

  6. Noam Bramson is walking the corruption line.
It’s almost funny now. He doesn’t even try to hide it anymore, like that woman in yonkers.

    1. No doubt he’s got his contracts already signed…
and he wants a chain restaurant and the razing of the Armory to be his legacy, before he goes to sit at the right hand of Idoni I.

      1. Why, John?
Who will be deciding on his election?————-

We the People who pay attention?

        We the People who care?

We the People who know his past three terms as a do-nothing Mayor?

We the People who care about his past three terms as a do-nothing Mayor?

        Or……………………….Idoni I?

See where I’m going with this? I rest my case.

      2. Basically, what you are
Basically, what you are saying is that we are screwed.
