ALBANY, NY — New York State Police Troop T is planning to boost patrols and establish checkpoints along the New York State Thruway during St. Patrick’s Day weekend beginning Friday, March 15, and continuing through Sunday, March 17, the Thruway Authority announced today.
Checkpoints will be set up at various locations throughout the 570 mile Thruway system.
Everyday, the uniformed officers of Troop T aggressively enforce all traffic laws on the Thruway, including the apprehension of motorists driving while impaired (DWI) due to the use of alcohol or drugs.
In 2012, Troop T issued 150,000 tickets, 890 of which were for DWI and 71,000 for speeding.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, alcohol-impaired motor vehicle crashes cost more than an estimated $37 billion annually. In addition, alcohol impairment among drivers involved in fatal crashes is about four times higher at night than during the day.
