NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Principal Joseph Williams of the Daniel Webster Magnet School sent a message to school staff warning them of coyotes prowling in the area around of the New Rochelle elementary school.
“I have been informed that two coyotes were spotted in the neighborhood,” said Williams. “I would suggest that you exercise caution if leaving the building.”
Williams added that New Rochelle police were notified.
Several parents contacted by Talk of the Sound said they did not receive robo-calls or notes home in backpacks, the most common method of parental notification.
I think parents should be informed,” said one parent who asked not to be identified. “I think it is irresponsible for parents to being pick up their kids without being informed.”
One Webster student said there was an announcement over the PA system that despite the clear weather, recess would be held indoors.
Thank you for letting us know
Since there was no official notice from the school, should parents and community members conclude that everything is OK and children will be safe during the morning drop off ?… If the school district did not notify parents, does it mean that the “coyote sighting” was unfounded? Uncomfortable silence… This is serious business. Parents should exercise caution when dropping off children.
