Fiery Crash on I-95 in New Rochelle Closes New England Thruway in Both Directions

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — A three-car collision resulted in a fiery explosion this evening around 6:30 p.m.on I-95 in New Rochelle.

There are no reports of injuries at this time but several ambulances were sent to the scene. Preliminary report of some unspecified injuries. Witness tell Talk of the Sound the people in the white car that caught fire escaped the vehicle.

One of the vehicles in the northbound lane of the thruway burst into flames after being rear-ended by another vehicle. Billowing black smoke could be seen for miles and filling the downtown area of New Rochelle.

New Rochelle firefighters struggled to get to the scene due to heavy traffic in both directions and confusion as to the exact location of the incident.

New Rochelle Fire Department responded with three engines, two ladder trucks and a rescue truck.

The New England Thruway was closed for several hours, re-opening later Sunday night.
