NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Life and work at the former Fort Slocum on Davids Island off New Rochelle will be the topic of a Fort Slocum Reunion to be held at the New Rochelle Public Library (NRPL) on Friday, June 14th, from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm, with a lunch break from 12:00 – 1:30 pm. Former service personnel and military dependents now living from Maine to California are traveling to New Rochelle for the informal gathering of conversation and reminiscence. Local veterans, civilian employees and military dependents who lived or worked at Fort Slocum before it was deactivated in 1966 are welcome to participate as well. The New Rochelle Public Library’s extensive collection of photographs and documents on the island and Fort Slocum will be available for viewing.

Several of those expected to participate were instructors at the U.S. Army Information School in the early 1960s. The school was moved to Ft. Benjamin Harrison, Indiana, in 1965 when Ft. Slocum was closed.

Those wishing to participate or seeking further information should contact Barbara Davis, Community Relations Coordinator at NRPL and City Historian at (914) 632-8269, or bdavis@nrpl.org.
