NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Talk of the Sound recently obtained several reports and other documents related to School Safety and Security in the New Rochelle school system from the period 2009 to 2012. Some are low quality photocopies. We will present several of them over the coming weeks.
In 2009 and 2010, the Olweus Bullying Questionnaire was administered to students at several New Rochelle schools. This questionnaire measures a number of aspects of bullying problems in schools. To the best of our knowledge the results of this survey were never shared with the public.
In 2009, there were 474 girls and 498 boys who completed the questionnaire in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade at Isaac E. Young Middle School.
Nearly 15% of the boys and girls at lEYMS indicated that they have been bullied 2-3 times or more in the past month. Similarly, 15% reported bullying others 2-3 times or more in the past month. Only 4%, however, reported both bullying others and being a victim 2-3 times or more in the past month.
63% of the time students tell if they have been bullied. They tell their parents/guardians first, friends next, then teachers, other adults in the school, brother/sister, somebody else.
58% of students say teachers and other adults try to put a stop to bullying.
48% of the students say that their teachers do try to cut down on bullying in the classroom at least sometimes.
