NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Two people were injured after they were shot in front of the MacLeay Apartments on Fifth Avenue in New Rochelle last night.
One of the two, an uninvolved person, was struck in the knee after two shots were fired by a man involved in an altercation in a grassy area in front of 550 Fifth Avenue, according to witness at the scene. The victims conditions are unknown but witnesses said the man shot in the knee appeared to be moving and alert as he was taken away by paramedics. No one else was injured.
The Journal News is reporting that they spoke to witnesses that said “two men were fighting when one pulled out a gun and shot the other in the leg. When a woman came to break up the fight, the man with the gun shot her in the abdomen.”
The shooting occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m.
The shooter fled the scene in an SUV heading towards the Potter Avenue Bridge. Witnesses at the scene said the shooter may have been from Mount Vernon.
Thirty minutes after the shooting, a Westchester County Police helicopter circled downtown New Rochelle in the area between the Avalon apartments and New Roc City for about an hour. The helicopter continued to circe
The area in front of the apartments was roped off with yellow crime scene tape as police walked the scene.
Witnesses said the shots sounded “like two firecrackers going off”.
Police found two shell casings at the crime scene, one on a sidewalk, the second on the edge of a sidewalk.
