Structure Fire Guts 2 Floors of House in New Rochelle

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — New Rochelle Fire Fighters battled a structure fire tonight for about an hour. The fire was in a large single-family home located at 72 Highland Avenue in New Rochelle. 22 firefighters were on scene. Pelham FD and NRPD were also involved.

The call came in at approximately 8:45 p.m.

Deputy Chief John Reed said the fire started on the second floor and moved up into the third floor. Flames were between the second and third floor and through the roof as fire fighters arrived on the scene.

“Tough old house, lot of fire running in walls and ceiling, very aggressive firefighting,” said Reed, who commended the men for their effort.

Reed said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Witnesses said the fire may have been the result of a space heater.

UPDATE 9:42 PM – NRFD calls fire under control.

UPDATE 9:49 PM – 1 firefighter being treated for dehydration and fatigue by EMTs at the scene.

UPDATE: 10:10 PM – NRFD says 7 people inside, all escaped, will be allowed to return for belongings but otherwise left homeless by the fire.

    Just want to remind people that ladder 12 has there ladder up to the top of the house. Reminder that the city was thinking about closing this ladder company down. Thank god there are no plans in this years budget to do that.
