NEW ROCHELLE, NY — New Rochelle Police spent two hours Saturday night dealing with a disorderly group of about 75 teens roaming downtown New Rochelle getting into fights, screaming, yelling and being disorderly. Talk of the Sound condensed the scanner traffic, added in a photo of a police barricade set up at North Avenue and Huguenot and a 25 second video of the teens at the intersection of North Avenue and Anderson Street near New Roc City.
The teens were from Mount Vernon and New Rochelle.
New Rochelle police deployed 12-15 officers between 10 p.m. and 12 a.m. to the downtown area and train station. The MTA also deployed to the train station at the request of NRPD.
All sectors were emptied out to contend with the roving band of teens that came together, broke apart and reformed throughout the evening. As a result, there were no patrol cars anywhere else in the city throughout most of the event.
One police officer told Talk of the Sound that things could have gotten out of control with so few officers to contend with a such a large group of violent teens.
The scanner traffic provided a glimpse into the efforts of officers of the NRPD to monitor and direct the various groups of teens. Much of what took place on scene was not reflected in the scanner traffic as officers engaged directly to break up fights.
Sporadic brawls occurred near Avalon 2, the New Rochelle Public Library, the Hollows, Harrison Street near the Fire Station, the North Avenue CVS Parking lot and other locations.
Two hours of scanner traffic was condensed into about a 17 minute video.
Talk of the Sound contributor, EyeOnNewRoc, livetweeted the action. A YouTube video with the video, photo and scanner traffic was placed into Storify along with the livetweets.
