New Rochelle Ready for #Hercules with 19 Trucks Per Shift, 1900 Tons of Salt — No Trash/Recycling Pick Up Friday

Written By: Talk of the Sound News

The City of New Rochelle is ready for the first big snow storm of 2014.

Code-named “Hercules” by the National Weather Service, the storm could dump up to 10 inches of snow on New Rochelle after which temperatures will plummet to near zero.

“We have 13 routes City wide plus four garbage trucks with plows and Sanders behind them for major roadways for a total of 19 trucks per shift,” said City Manager Chuck Strome.

The primary roads in New Rochelle are North Avenue, Main Street/Huguenot, Quaker Ridge Road, and Pinebrook Boulevard.

Road salt will not be a problem.

“We had 500 tons of salt left over and received a delivery of 1400 tons Monday which provides a total of 1900 tons which should be plenty to get us through the storm,” said Strome.

Strome noted that due to the size of the storm, there will be no garbage/commingled recycling pickup tomorrow as scheduled. Regular collection will resume next week.

“We are sending out a robocall to the areas that get collection tomorrow to let them know,” said Strome.

Residents are strongly encouraged to avoid any unnecessary travel during and immediately after the storm.

Drivers should do their best to get their cars off the primary roads to give DPW crews more room to work with in clearing the streets.

UPDATE: Robocall and email is now out…

Storm Cancellations, Closing and Precautions

Due to the predicted winter storm, please note the following:

South End garbage and recycling collection scheduled for Friday, January 3 has been cancelled. Normal collection will resume next week. The next commingled recycling pickup will be January 15.
As flooding is possible during tonight’s high tide expected at around 11:30 PM, residents in low lying areas are advised to take appropriate precautions.
The Hugh A. Doyle Senior Center in New Rochelle will be closed on Friday, January 3 and Saturday, January 4. All senior programs are cancelled including the rescheduled holiday party January 4. Party reservations will be refunded or credited to accounts.
Residents are asked to please assist the Fire Department by shoveling out snow around the hydrants near their home.
Where possible, cars should be removed from street parking to facilitate plowing.
In the case of power outages, please call Con Edison directly at 1-800- CON ED (1-800-752-6633)
