NEW ROCHELLE, NY — It got downright chilly at one New Rochelle today after the heating system broke down, effecting a small area of the school.
News12’s Lisa Reyes was first to report that heating systems in 5 classrooms failed at Columbus Elementary school in New Rochelle earlier today.
Talk of the Sound has since confirmed that HVAC units in these classrooms required service. Based on a letter to parents sent by School Principal Sonia Nuñez there was a “boiler mishap” that required repair.
Students in these classrooms were moved to other instructional spaces in the building so that repairs could be done.
Temperatures were in the single-digits when schools opened this morning, the first day back from the Christmas Break.
“With this unprecedented cold, the heating systems in all of our buildings have been tested to the limit,” said interim Superintedent Dr. Jeffrey Korostoff.
A letter was sent home to parents by Columbus Principal Sonia Nuñez:
January 7, 2014
Dear Parents:
Due to the weather conditions, we had a boiler mishap that tested our heating system in a few classrooms. We moved the affected students and teachers to another location within the building without loss of instructional time.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at 914-576-4400.
Sincerely,
Sonia Nuñez
