New Rochelle, NY — Habitat for Humanity of Westchester’s annual MLK Build-A-Thon, a more than week-long event, will kick off on Friday January 17th.
Long before it was in vogue, Habitat for Humanity of Westchester has been building with thousands for MLK day.
“In one of the wealthiest counties in the world we believe that people should be able to lay their head down at night in a place where they can call home,” said Habitat Executive Director Jim Killorin.
Habitat will build from Peekskill to Yonkers, helping people make the dream of home ownership come true, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.
Included in his year’s Build-A-Thon is the Inter-Religious Council of New Rochelle, Byram Hills, Pelham, New Rochelle, Temple Israel, Shiloh Baptist Church, Iona College Horace Greely High School, And Horace Mann High School.
Volunteers will be working on veteran homes in Yonkers, painting projects in New Rochelle, two congregation halls in New Rochelle, and also working on a condomimium in Peekskill.
“Like Martin Luther King Jr., we have a dream that everyone in Westchester County, in Hurricane Sandy areas, and in New York can have a simple descent home to live in,” said Killorin. “Affordability has been near impossible”.
