NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Westchester County Police on Thursday night arrested a Connecticut woman and seized 5,900 envelopes of heroin with an estimated street value of $59,000 following a traffic stop on the Hutchinson River Parkway in New Rochelle.
Officers from the Patrol Task Force stopped a Honda Accord that was being driven erratically about 11:45 p.m. Thursday night near Wilmot Road in New Rochelle. The driver was extremely nervous and gave conflicting information to officers about her travel in the area.
A county police narcotics detection canine, Suki, was brought to the scene.
“Suki did an exterior sweep of the vehicle and indicated on the presence of narcotics,” said Kieran O’Leary. Public Information Officer for the Westchester County Police. “A subsequent search of the car turned up 5,900 envelopes of heroin hidden in the trunk.”
The heroin has an estimated street value of $59,000.
10 small bags/glassine envelopes make a Deck and 10 Decks make a Bundle. The 5,900 envelopes seized by police were packaged as 59 “bundles” containing 100 individual envelopes, according to police.
“We used the $59,000 figure because the individual envelope sold on the street to a user sells for about $10 each”, said O’Leary. “We’ve seen as low as $8 and as much as $20 depending on the area and availability, but we usually use the $10 figure as an estimate for so-called street value”.
Leslie Dawkins, 25, of Waterbury was taken into custody and booked at county police headquarters in Hawthorne on a charge of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 1st Degree and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 3rd Degree (Intent to Sell), felonies.
Dawkins was held overnight and arraigned today in New Rochelle City Court. She was remanded to the Westchester County Jail without bail.
